This is Uttarakhand was meant to be experienced — a journey through sacred rivers, colonial hill stations, and misty valleys that have inspired poets, sadhus and adventurers for centuries. It begins in Rishikesh — the yoga capital of the world, where the Ganga runs green and rapid through a gorge flanked by ashrams and adventure camps. White-water rafting, bungee jumping, evening aartis that send shivers down the spine. Then Haridwar — where the Ganga first touches the plains and millions come to wash away sin. The Har Ki Pauri ghat at dusk is among the most visually spectacular things in India. Dehradun — the gracious capital of Uttarakhand, a city of old schools, wide boulevards, and the best basmati rice in the country. And finally Mussoorie — the Queen of Hills, perched at 2,000m with views of the Doon Valley below and snow peaks above, her Mall Road a century-old promenade of memory and mist.
